The Tanning Branch Inspector is expected to be knowledgeable of all the Branch's programs and to provide a comprehensive perspective on specific issues. The primary purpose of the tanning inspector position is inspecting and assisting facilities to maintain compliance with regulations for ultraviolet tanning facilities in 10A NCAC 15 .1400. Tanning Branch Inspector job includes:

• Ensure compliance of tanning bed facilities with state and federal regulations

• Perform technical and professional inspections of tanning bed facilities.

• Assess for compliance and determining facility violations.

• Enter collected data to generate reports, review and evaluate existing data, facilities, and systems.

• Research of literature and consultation with professionals in the field, as technology is constantly changing, and regulations are revised.

• Generate accurate database inspection reports.

• Effective communication, both oral and written, with facility owners.

• Interpretation and enforcement of tanning rules.

• Thorough knowledge and understanding of the hazards/health risks associated with tanning.

• Assist with enforcement through timely follow-up communication with facilities which have failed to respond to Notice of Violations letters.

• Attend and participate in emergency nuclear exercises for 4 nuclear facilities every year.

This position is home-based in Wake County or surrounding area and requires a minimum of 2-3 days of regional travel per week.

About the Division of Health Service Regulation and the Radiation Protection Section:

The Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR) provides for the health, safety and well-being of individuals through effective regulatory and remedial activities including appropriate consultation and training opportunities and by improving access to health care delivery systems through the rational allocation of needed facilities and services.

The Radiation Protection Section's mission is to reduce radiation exposure to the citizens and occupational workers of North Carolina, reduce radiation contamination to the environment and protect all from radiation hazards.

• Knowledge to perform technical and professional inspections of tanning bed facilities.

• Demonstrated skills in communicating effectively (verbally and in writing).

• Competency to interpret federal and state regulations.

• Must possess and maintain an active and unrestricted driver's license and have the ability to drive for regional travel to perform inspections.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to sit/stand/walk for prolonged periods; ability to finger/talk/hear/smell; ability to lift luggage (20 - 50 pounds); close visual acuity.

Management Preferences:

• Skills to use a variety of Office programs, including entering data into an Access database and generating reports.

• Knowledge and effective enforcement of tanning violations.

• Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.

Bachelor's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution;

An equivalent combination of education and experience.
