Job Summary:
Under a collaborative practice agreement, and with a Patient Centered mindset and focus, the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) may work in a variety of clinical settings and environments, serving a diverse range of patient ages and diagnostic categories. Practice settings may include inpatient hospital based psychiatric units, general medical units, consult/liaison psychiatry, emergency departments, ambulatory care clinics, outpatient clinics and the group practice affiliated with Wayne Health. Services rendered may require in- person, utilize remote telemedicine, and/or require timely telephone response. On-call rotation for a variety of duties is also possible.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible for providing psychiatric services to patients in a variety of clinical settings including inpatient, outpatient and telemedicine duties.
Conduct psychiatric evaluations and medication management services.
Conduct patient rounds if assigned
Prescribe, recommend, or discontinue drugs and treatment to treat mental, emotional or behavioral disorders in accordance with Collaborative Practice Agreements, and the State of MI Nurse Practice Act.
Collaborate with Therapists, Social Workers, Case Managers and others to coordinate care for patients.
Counsel patients as necessary during appointments
Design/participate in the creation of individualized treatment plans.
Order, evaluate and monitors medical and laboratory diagnostic tests as well as interdisciplinary consults in collaboration with other treating providers.
Educate and counsel patient and family on condition, desired results of treatment plans during illness and recovery.
Collaborate with guardians or other care givers, such as Group Home Staff
Make independent decisions based upon National Standards and protocols in place
Actively participate in all entity, agency and departmental educational requirements
Prepare and submit assessments, progress notes as required
Utilize timely e-prescribing methodologies
Return calls and e-mails promptly (within 24 hours or sooner if clinically necessary).
Respond to patient emergencies in a timely manner and when necessary, remain on-site until relieved of duties by another provider or supervising physician.
Administer IM or other medications as appropriate.
Record all services performed for accurate billing for services in compliance with all federal, state and local regulations.
Seek supervision and support from attending physicians and submit cases for Quality Review.
Prepare Discharge Summaries as assigned
May participate in clinical or experimental research, including analysis of data.

Education, Licensure/Certification, and Training:

Master's or Doctorate Degree in Nursing with a focus in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing
Registered Nurse licensure to practice in State of Michigan
Graduation from a state-certified Nurse Practitioner program specializing in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing or post-grad certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing in combination with other Nurse Practitioner education.
Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
Must possess an unrestricted license to practice as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) in the State of Michigan, and an unrestricted DEA registration for each practice location.
Must possess Psychiatric Mental Health (PMHNP) certification.
State issued Controlled Substance license
No suspension / exclusion / disbarment from participation in any federal health care programs
Active and up to date documentation of collaborating physician relationship.
3 years of direct patient care to persons receiving treatment for psychiatric disorders, preferred.
Current BLS certification
Knowledge of OSHA, MIOSHA, JACHO, CARF and HIPAA regulations

Skills and Abilities Required:

Knowledge of patient centered care standards and practices
Knowledge of professional theory, and contemporary practice standards
Ability to work with students and trainees
Ability to foster teamwork
Ability to work productively and make independent decisions.
Flexibility to accommodate the needs of the entire team of providers and adapt to change.
Ability to work quickly and complete assigned duties within specified timelines.
Familiarity with EHR's and usual electronic methodologies for professional documentation and correspondence

Safety Requirements:

Compliance with Department Health and Safety policies and procedures, and with those of the DMC and Wayne Health.

Working Conditions/Schedules:

40-hour workweek
Hours and days to be determined by the business needs of the department
May require on-call duty and the ability to work outside of scheduled work hours when the need arises
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
