Director - Career Readiness

Related positions are contingent upon board approval.

This position creates a vision for career readiness programming across the district, including the implementation of CTE programs and a robust work-based learning structure. Success will be determined by the director's ability to partner with the Director - College Readiness, offices across the district and agencies across the city to expose students to, prepare students for, and connect students with career opportunities that pay a family-sustaining wage. By aligning the work of the CTE team, partners, and financial resources with the priorities of the CTE strategic plan and the district, the director will help Baltimore City Public Schools students develop and reach their career goals.

Essential Functions

Develops and implements a comprehensive vision for career readiness for grades K-12.

Assists in the creation of and implements four-year CTE plan currently under development by district staff.

Supervises the CTE team to ensure schools are supported in providing rigorous, highly effective CTE instruction that leads to student preparation for career.

Coordinates the application for and spending of Perkins and other career readiness grant funding in accordance with federal guidelines.

Coordinates the completion of required MSDE reporting.

Proposes Career Readiness budget in alignment with office and district priorities

Works closely with the Director - College Readiness to communicate to students a coherent vision for postsecondary pathways.

Reviews CTE outcomes in aggregate and by subgroup to identify areas for improvement.

Increases the profile of CTE across Baltimore City, including effective recruitment of students for CTE programs, staff to teach CTE, and promotion of the successes of CTE programming districtwide.

Develops comprehensive work-based learning structure, including, but not limited to, job shadowing, work-study, apprenticeship, and internships in partnership with schools and employers.

Liaises with employers to ensure that CTE curriculum is aligned with employer needs, including through the Program Advisory Committee and Local Advisory Committee structures.

Partners with the Mayor's Office of Employment Development, other city agencies, and non-profits to connect students with employment, with an emphasis on in-demand, high-skill, high-wage jobs with a career pathway.

Coordinates professional learning opportunities for CTE teachers and principals.

Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies, and the professional standards.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Education, Administration or related field. Master's degree considered in lieu of three years' experience. Degree must be from an accredited college or institute.

Three years supervisory/administrative/leadership experience in an urban education environment with demonstrated success.

Considerable knowledge of governmental mandates impacting education and workforce development, including Perkins, as well as local, state, and federal grants and fiscal policy impacting funding in urban education.

Considerable knowledge of current issues facing urban public education and workforce development.

Ability to generate and build effective and successful partnerships across multiple offices and organizations.

Understanding of the local political landscape in Baltimore City.

Interpersonal skills that ensure effective team building.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to make persuasive presentations to diverse audiences and community members.

Proficient in the knowledge and use of technical computer applications.
