Introduction:

The Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs provides executive leadership in assisting the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (VCAA) in the development and administration of academic programs and their associated activities. This position is charged as a full deputy to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs in the area of academic programs described here.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Provide guidance and support in curricular and co-curricular assessment and re-accreditation efforts.
  2. Interprets and prepares academic policies, procedures, requirements; oversees curricular and co-curricular program reviews in compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the University Policies and Procedures.
  3. Coordinates the search and hiring of new faculty. Advises the VCAA, division chairs, and faculty on search process, timelines, and procedures.
  4. Develops campus-wide policies and procedures for academic personnel. This includes faculty appointment, reappointment, tenure, promotion, leaves, compensation, grievances, complaints (to include EEO/AA), etc.
  5. Serves as senior advisor to the VCAA and the Chancellor in matters involving complex and precedent setting complaints, issues, and grievances. This includes administering and interpreting the faculty collective bargaining provisions, University policies and procedures, and advising in the area of academic human resources.
  6. Establishes policies and procedures as it relates to faculty development and teaching excellence. Supervises and provides leadership relative to professional development, support, mentoring, and counseling. Develops and implements orientation programs, in-service training, distance education, instructional publications, faculty teaching, awards, and scholarships, educational improvement funds distribution, needs assessments, etc.
  7. Oversees the planning, development, and implementation of academic programs to include (but not limited to): Early College, International Programs, Work Force Development, and Summer Session as well as work in partnership with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs in such efforts as: enrollment management, academic advising, grants, and community college partnerships, etc.
  8. Supervises the tenure and promotion process to include ensuring timely training, informational communication, and interpretation and intent of relevant collective bargaining provisions.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Doctoral degree or equivalent terminal degree in an academic discipline from an accredited college or university.
  2. Attainment of the rank of Professor or equivalent
  3. Experience in a leadership capacity in a regional 4-year postsecondary institution, in matters concerning academic personnel and faculty development.
  4. Experience in program development and evaluation, including program review, assessment, and accreditation in higher education
  5. Strong organizational skills; track record or working collaboratively with faculty; and ability to lead effectively in a collegial environment.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  7. Demonstrated experience working effectively with a variety of personnel/groups, e.g., executives, faculty, staff, students, and Faculty Senate.
  8. Knowledge of academic programs and administration.
  9. Demonstration of working effectively with diverse communities, including but not limited to Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and Asian American communities.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Teaching experience in higher education.
  2. Attainment of the rank of Professor or equivalent.
  3. Scholarly contributions to the knowledge of Hawai`i and/or the Pacific/Asia Region.
  4. Understanding of issues related to Native Hawaiians and Hawai`i's unique culture environment.
  5. Experience in a unionized setting in academic personnel contract interpretation and management.
