Starting salary after successful completion of the Trainee period (up to 24 months) is $21.106/hour ($43,902 annually)

The Public Health Educator II - Trainee position provides program candidates with training, experience, and a better understanding of tobacco control activities in Pima County. This grant-funded trainee position will work closely with Tobacco Prevention Program staff on providing multi-faceted prevention and cessation education and engagement with community coalition members, partnering agencies, schools, and families. The trainee position will report directly to the Tobacco Prevention Program Coordinator.

• Leads the development of comprehensive health education programs, curricula, and materials tailored to diverse populations and community needs;
• Collaborates with program coordinators and manager to design evidence-based educational content and strategies;
• Plans and facilitates health education sessions, workshops, and presentations in various community settings, ensuring that content aligns with program goals and objectives;
• Utilizes advanced teaching methods to engage participants, encourage behavior change, and promote health literacy;
• Creates, reviews, and updates educational resources, pamphlets, multimedia materials, and digital content;
• Cultivates and maintains relationships with community organizations, schools, healthcare providers, and local agencies to enhance health education program reach and effectiveness;
• Takes a lead role in community outreach, building awareness of public health issues, available resources, and healthy behaviors;
• Provides guidance and mentorship to junior health educators;
• Offers training and professional development opportunities to build capacity within the team;
• May supervise health education program staff.
Minimum Qualifications

1) A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university AND one year of experience providing health education.

OR

2) Three years of experience with Pima County as a Community Health Worker II, Public Health Navigator, or Public Health Educator I.

Selection Procedure:

Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates: Valid driver license is required at time of application. ValidAZdriver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services' review and approval of the candidate's driving record.

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the County.

The Pima County Trainee Program provides training related to the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities required by the classification to enable the Trainee to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification within the time limits of the program. The Trainee Program lasts a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 24 months. During the trainee period, the incumbent is paid 5 percent less than the entry-level salary for the position.An eligible individual is any person interested in a Trainee Program opportunity who: (1) Does not meet the minimum qualification at the time it is announced but is able to do so by the end of the training period OR (2) does meet the minimum qualifications but is not competitive enough to pass selective criteria. Trainees are eligible for a non-competitive transition into the regular classified position upon successful completion of the program.
