The Opportunity:

A Fire Prevention Officers reports to the Deputy Fire Chief - Prevention and is responsible for meeting the day-to-day challenges of providing fire inspection services regarding fire code compliance, Fire Protection Screenings, 'Hot Work' inspections and support to Facilities Decommissioning and Environmental Remediation Management.

Fire Prevention Officers provide an integral component to ensuring the safety of CNL employees, visitors and contractors by reducing the potential for fire incidents to occur across site. The work carried out through the close working relationships built by Fire Prevention officers with our fire protection engineers, fire department personnel, and other CNL staff, is vital to ensuring that all our site remains in compliance with the National Fire Code and best in class industry standards.

What You Will Be Doing:

Conducts fire and life safety inspections on all buildings and lands at CNL.
Address Fire Code violations and fire safety hazards within the authority of the NFCC, NBCC, NFPA 801 and/or CSA N393, as mandated by CRL Site Licence.
Complete fire investigations in accordance with 900-508720-MCP-001 and NFPA 1033 - Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator

Complies with Fire Protection Program Program Requirements Document And Program Description Document.
Prepares reports and maintains records detailing building information, code violations and actions to be taken.
Reviews and recommends for the approval of alternative compliance solutions pursuant to the NBCC.
Conduct 'Hot Work' inspections when required.
Reads and interprets building plans, blueprints, site plans, construction plans and specifications.
Performs public relations activities. Presents seminar on fire prevention and safety to employees and specialty groups.
Delivers education programs and training, such as fire extinguisher use, related to fire safety when required.
Participates in the pre-incident plan review and inspection process when required.
Performs administrative activities.
Demonstrates a commitment to personal and professional development.
Must be able to follow direction of a senior officer.
Establish and maintain a high standard of professionalism, integrity, reliability and credibility, which are fundamental requirements for this position.
Function as an integral member of the CNL Fire Protection Program to deliver and support the vision and mission statements.
Function as an integral member of the CNL Fire Protection Program Emergency Response Group to deliver and support specific goals of emergency response and preparedness.

What We Are Looking ForExperience:

Knowledge of the National Fire Code of Canada, National Building Code and other relative standards.
Must be familiar with the Canada Labour Code.
Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving capability as an individual and as a member of a team
Oral, written, and communication skills.
Problem solving analytical skills.
Interpersonal/interaction skills when dealing with employees and/or contractors.
Ability to effectively prioritize tasks/demands.
Ability to work within a team environment.

Demonstrated ability to make oral and other presentations using various administrative and audio/visual platforms such as Word Publisher and Word Power Point
Demonstrated experience or knowledge of sprinkler and fire alarm systems.
Experience in inspections and enforcement of regulations.
Expertise in reading blueprints, floor plans etc.
Expertise in the delivery of Public Education.

Education & Qualifications:

Legally entitled to work in Canada.
Must possess a minimum of a valid Ontario Driver's License Class 'G'
Certification to NFPA 1021 - Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications preferred or acquired within 1 year of start date.
Certification to NFPA 1031 - Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner Level 1 preferred or acquired within 3 year of the start date.
Certification to NFPA 1031 -Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner Level 2 within 4 years of the start date.
Certification to NFPA 1033 - Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Investigator preferred or acquired within 3 years of the start date.
Certification to NFPA 1035 - Standard for Professional Qualifications for Public Fire and Life Safety Educator acquired within 3 years of the start date.
Successful completion of NFPA 1041 - Standard for Fire Service Instructor Professional Qualifications, Level III preferred or acquired within 3 years of the start date.
Post-secondary education in Fire Protection Technology would be an asset.
Possession of a valid minimum Basic Life Support Certificate (CPR) and First Aid.

Working Conditions:

Willingness to work a compressed work week.
Must possess the ability to walk long distances, bend, crawl and climb ladders/scaffolding while conducting inspections.
Willingness and ability to work in adverse conditions, including inclement weather.
Ability to work under stressful conditions.
Ability to lift/move objects when required.

Security Clearance Required:

Level 3 Secret which has a minimum requirement of 10 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom . CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's 'Standard on Security Screening' and the 'Policy on Government Security.'
