Data Scientist Intern

Are you a rising senior, grad student or recent grad looking to further your knowledge of Data Science and gain valuable work experience? Qlarant is offering an eight-week summer internship for a high achieving candidate with a grade point average of at least a 3.0.

The internship is based in our Easton, Maryland headquarters. A well-qualified candidate could be home-based in Maryland. The selected candidate should plan to work 40 hours per week with a start date of June 5, 2023. The start date is preferred but there is flexibility if a different date is needed.

The intern will work with our Data Science team engaged in the development of cutting edge products for the public and private sectors. The internship may include but is not limited to:
• Develop an understanding of the data relevant to the problem to be addressed.

Utilize data wrangling techniques to work with data with the assistance of Data Scientists when needed.

Assist the Data Science team in establishing deterministic and probabilistic linkages between structured and unstructured data sources. Develop ways to extract and summarize the sought information in the data using basic statistical, data mining and machine learning techniques.

Use basic machine learning and data mining techniques to understand the patterns in large volumes of data, identify relationships, correlate disparate datasets, detect data anomalies, and classify data sets.

Assist the Data Science team to design and build algorithms and predictive models using techniques such as linear and logistic regression, support vector machines, ensemble models (random forest and/or gradient boosted trees), neural networks, and clustering techniques.

Convert designs and specifications into computer code as assigned. Compiles code into programs and corrects errors. Analyzes code to find causes of errors and revises programs.

Prepare and present a final project.

Establishing deterministic and probabilistic linkages between structured and unstructured data sources. Develop ways to extract and summarize the sought information in the data using basic statistical, data mining and machine learning techniques.

Automate standardized processes optimization.

• Familiarity with statistical programming and database software and MS Office.
• Ability to perform basic assembly, manipulation, and analysis of data including some or all of the following: data extraction, cleaning, visualization, presentation, etc.
• Ability to work with highly sensitive information while preserving the confidentiality of the information.
• Ability to deal with ambiguity in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Required Experience

Current rising senior, grad student or recent grad in a quantitative field such as applied mathematics, statistics, biostatistics, physics, computer science, or operations research required.

Academic courses, projects, internships and/or work experience that includes some or all of the following: data extraction and cleaning, exploratory analysis, predictive modeling, machine learning, monitoring of algorithms, coding and data visualization.

Experience with programming languages such as Python, R, SAS, Matlab, SQL, Pig, Hive, and Scala strongly preferred.

Intermediate level Microsoft Office skills to include Excel, PowerPoint and Word.

Qualifications:





• Manage and guarantee accurate weekly disbursement of multi-state payroll, including garnishments, withholdings, benefits, per diem, and taxes consistent with federal and respective state wage and hour laws.
• Ensure accurate processing of new hires, rehires, transfers, promotions, and terminations.
• Lead and mentor a payroll staff; set goals and evaluate performance.
• Manage regular preparation of relevant reports, including weekly, monthly, quarterly, and year-end close functions and reports; generate and mail W-2 forms.
