Summary

This is responsible stationary equipment maintenance work involving the maintenance and repair of pump station equipment.

Work involves responsibility for safe repair of standard pump station machinery to assure sound operation. Duties include operating maintenance power equipment, shop equipment, repairing machinery and overseeing the work of others when assigned. This position also has the responsibility for making standard machinery repair decisions. This work requires that the employee have good knowledge, skill and ability in stationary equipment mechanic work.

Works under the general supervision of a Sanitary Sewer Crew Leader.
Duties

Maintains and repairs standard motors, generators, grinders, commutators, blowers, conveyors, pumps, compressors, turbines, and related equipment. Replaces belts, gears, chains and related parts. Services contacts in an electrical panel. Uses an ohmmeter, voltmeter and related equipment. Uses lock out/tag out equipment when necessary.

Changes oils and fluids in pumps and reservoirs. Greases bearings. Replaces filters in hydraulic equipment and blowers.

Troubleshoots, replaces, and programs Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and Soft Starters.

Troubleshoots, replaces, rebuilds and adjusts level transducers.

Troubleshoots and replaces motors. Aligns motors to pumps.

Replaces and adjusts Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).

Rebuilds pumps. Replaces seals, bearings, shafts and impellers in pumps.

Rebuilds, repacks, replaces valves and check valves.

Replace worn or broken pipe sections within the pump stations.

Wires or rewires electrical enclosures. Installs relays, timers, safety devices and other equipment in electrical enclosures.

Tests and changes circuit breakers, safety switches, and disconnects. Tests and replaces fuses.

Exercises valves periodically.

Replaces and adjusts floats.

Refuels generators, pumps and other equipment at various locations throughout the Township when required.

Checks generator fluid levels when required. Exercises generators when required.

Responds to pipe breaks/failures, mechanical and electrical failures when required.

Removes grit from wet wells and washes wet wells when required.

Performs maintenance work on buildings as required.

May be required to work during off hours/non-peak flow hours.

Performs snow plowing, salting, and shoveling duties as necessary. Installs plows, salt spreaders and chains when required. Cleans snow equipment after use.

Detects standard operating problems in plant equipment and determines corrective actions to be taken. Sketches and lays out equipment repairs.

Operates grinders, drill presses, and other machine shop equipment to fabricate parts to tolerances.

Performs welding, rigging, plumbing, and carpentry as necessary.

Performs work in a safe manner and observes all safety procedures. Works in confined spaces.

Uses all tools, equipment and materials responsibly and performs basic inspection and preventive maintenance prior to use.

Fills out forms/data entry into tracking software on completed work assignments.

Performs work of lower classifications as necessary.

Oversees the work of others as assigned.

Responds to emergencies at any time of day or night as directed. Serves on-call per departmental policy.

May be assigned to other Public Works divisions to perform required duties.

Performs related work as required. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

A high school or trade school diploma or the equivalent, plus three years of maintenance mechanic or machine shop experience, or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience substituting on a year-for-year basis.

Must have a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B) free of air brake restriction.

Must have an ASSE 5110 Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification or the ability to obtain within the constraints of the ASSE course schedule. Once the ASSE 5110 Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification has been obtained, ASSE 5130 Backflow Prevention Assembly Repairer certification must also be obtained within the constraints of the ASSE course schedule.

Must be certified, or able to prove training in lock-out, tag-out procedures. Candidates not meeting this requirement will be required to attend the next available training as coordinated by the Department of Public Works.

Must maintain a current confined space certification. Candidates not meeting this requirement will be required to attend the next available training as coordinated by the Department of Public Works.

Must maintain a current flagger certification conforming with PennDOT Pub 408, Section 901 and as provided by the Township at all times. Candidates not meeting this requirement will be required to attend the next available training as coordinated by the Department of Public Works.

Knowledge of proper use of air packs.

Knowledge of proper use of tripod and harness.

Good knowledge of the tools, equipment and methods of maintenance mechanic work.

Good knowledge of Control Voltage (low voltage, 5V to 120V) and Supply Voltage (240/480V Single and 3PH).

Good knowledge of the work standards and safety procedures in maintenance mechanic work.

Good skill in the use of the tools and equipment of the mechanic trade.

Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.

Good ability to perform maintenance mechanic work safely, effectively, and efficiently.

Good knowledge of basic electric computerized motor controls and emergency power systems.

Good ability to diagnose the various mechanical, electric, plumbing and safety systems used in the field of sanitary sewer pumps station operations and maintenance.

Good knowledge in the installation, operation, and maintenance of permanent and portable gasoline, diesel, and natural gas generators.

Good ability to follow oral and written instructions and to learn Township procedures.
