Summary

The Sr.
Medical Assistant in the Infusion Center must be able to assist in registration and scheduling of patients, and other general duties as requested.
The NEW JOB TITLE performs peripheral lab draws and injections.
Maintains stock items in the outpatient lab area.
They will service as the "order liaison" for any new orders presented to the Infusion Center.
Responsibilities also include follow up with physician offices if additional information is required for incoming infusion referrals.
Obtains prior authorizations and refers patients to the medical social worker if indicated.
The Sr.
Medical Assistant assists physician offices that may be in need of additional education to ensure they understand the ordering process to the infusion center and the required information to process the referrals is obtained.

Responsibilities

(25%)
• Obtain and accurately record in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) baseline measurements necessary for the safe delivery of care such as:
Vital Signs, height and weight, allergies; as well as psychosocial and home care issues like home medications, safety, comfort, travel screening, etc.
Monitor safety parameters during infusions and record in the EMR as well as immediately report abnormalities to the RN, including Vital Signs, nausea and / or vomiting, any reports by the patient of signs and or symptoms of an infusion reaction including:
flushing, sweating, clammy skin, diaphoretic, chest pain, shortness of breath or dyspnea, dizziness, rash, hives, or swelling, or others as directed by the RN.
Function as an integral part of the infusion care team during patient crisis or emergency situations by answering the telephone, moving other patients from the area, assisting EMS in accessing the building and finding the correct patient location, and or performing Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) per Basic Life Support (BLS) training and guidelines.

• Perform peripheral lab draws to obtain specimens.
Perform administration of injections.
Clean and prepare infusion chairs and rooms for usage by the next patient per policies and/or guidelines.

• Check infusion referral work queue for completeness in order to schedule infusion patients.

• Performs patient registration responsibilities, obtaining necessary signatures and authorizations for billing and release of medical information according to established procedure.
Provides excellent customer service to patients and referring physician offices in person and on the phone - Meet/Greet with smile, provide updated wait times, handle difficult situations that arise with the scheduling and registration process so that patients and referring physicians are satisfied with the outcome.
Completes EKG's for outpatients.
Follows scheduling guidelines so that the patient flow daily is as smooth as possible.
Scheduling therapy/treatment plan patients.
Work incoming infusion referrals in the work que.
Schedule Weekend/off hour patient appointments.
Answer incoming phone calls.
Scanning orders in.
Retrieve patients from the waiting room and escort them to their designated infusion location.
Turnover and clean patients chairs so they day continues in a timely manner.
Provide patients with comfort items such as:
blankets, pillows, snacks, reading material, assistance with the TV, drawing or opening the privacy curtain, and raising or lowering the window blinds.
Answer patient call lights and provide assistance ambulating and using the restroom.
Escort discharged patients out of the building and insure they safely enter their vehicle for transport home.
Facilitate communication of patient information with providers or other care givers including:
copying, faxing, emailing, maintenance requests, and or written notes.
Completes inventory and ordering of supplies on a regular basis.
Effectively operates a computer using MS Office applications such as Word, Excel as well as vital systems required for scheduling, registration and insurance verification etc.

Certifications and Licensures

BLS - Basic Life Support

Equivalent Experience:
Within 1 month of hire or transfer

MA CERT - Medical Assistant Required

Required Education

High School Diploma or GED required

Equivalent Experience:
Completion of an accredited course in medical terminology or knowledge of medical terminology as normally acquired through a minimum of one year experience in a medical center office setting .

Knowledge of reading, writing, mathematical and computer skills Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
