Now more than ever, states have a critical role to play in driving our country forward.
The Impact Project (TIP) does this by advancing economic and democracy policies that improve the quality of life for working- and middle-class people.
We are 100% focused at the state level and we work in AZ, CO, FL, GA, ME, MD, MI, MN, NC, NM, NV, PA, VA, and WI.
The Communications Director drives earned, social, and paid communications campaigns that educate the public and decision makers about pressing economic and democracy issues.
You ll lead messaging research, polling, and initiatives in your states as well as provide advice and support to each state s ongoing communications work.
The Communications Director reports to one of two Vice Presidents of Advocacy and coordinates closely with a team working in seven of our states.
The Communications Director will be one of two communications directors at The Impact Project.
This position is full-time and considered exempt for federal overtime purposes.
What_You ll_Do Drive impactful communications
• Elevate the discussion around communications strategy in your states, bring new ideas, and identify support needed.
• Develop messaging guidance for paid communications programs, train staff and consultants, and spot check materials to ensure consistency.
• Drive polling and social listening projects in your states, ensuring transparent and frequent communication with relevant State Directors.
• Advise the team on social media and website asset management and drive the team toward goals.
Ensure any ad dollars are wisely spent and tactics align with the goals.
Avidly track metrics from digital campaigns to learn what creative is performing best and share lessons with the team.
• Devise templates and training materials to help state managers and consultants map the media that target decision makers are consuming, diving in to help with mapping when needed.
Coach staff on how to incorporate that intel into future outreach strategies.
• Help State Directors vet communications consultants and coach them to get maximum value.
• Advise staff and local partners on reporter inquiries and crisis communications.
• Innovate and experiment
• Devise tests to learn what message, tone, images, and spokespeople are most effective in persuasion work and use those results to continually update best practices for the team.
• Build an external network of people doing innovative work and with expertise in tactics and tools that are newer to you.
• Collaborate with the Communications Director for our other states on TIP- wide communications initiatives, tracking news clips and social media successes, coordinating on polling and research, packaging and distributing research from national partners, and identifying opportunities to roll up progress in the states for national coverage.
• Provide weekly written updates on progress and lessons learned.
• What_Else_You_Should_Know The Impact Project operates in a 100% remote work environment.
Candidates who live in one of our states or the Washington, DC area are strongly preferred.
During non-COVID-19 times, there will be frequent travel required within the state and occasional national travel for in-person team meetings.
The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $115,000.
Current benefits include full medical, dental, prescription drug, and vision insurance, and participation in our retirement plan including an automatic 5% employer contribution in addition to an employer match of up to 3%.

You are familiar with new media, with a proven track record working in digital, message development and research techniques.
