Reporting to the Director Research, the Intellectual Property and Commercialization Specialist is responsible for building the Intellectual Property (IP) and Commercialization capacity at Sheridan to support faculty, staff, students and external partners in managing and commercializing the results of their research and entrepreneurship activities.
The incumbent is expected to work closely with Generator at Sheridan's Research and Entrepreneurship Centres, external partners and other Sheridan faculty/staff to enhance knowledge and awareness about IP and commercialization, and also to support those individuals and companies in managing and protecting their developed IP, including liaising with legal experts and triaging to other IP specialist partners, like Intellectual Property Ontario (IPON).

What You'll Be Doing
  • Accountable for developing and maintaining a menu of technical service and applied research supports related to research and entrepreneurship for clients and identify any gaps in service offerings; provide technical IP and commercialization guidance and expertise for executing commercialization projects, document project outcomes;
  • Liaising with IPON for the purpose of providing referrals and developing a deep understanding of IPON services and supports;
  • Ensuring that all activities comply with regulatory and ethical standards, including overseeing the approval process for IP/commercialization projects and managing data and records;
  • Conducting prior searches and developing patent landscape analyses and IP strategies for clients;
  • Coordinating and collaborating with EDGE to deliver services and facilitate referrals to and from existing ecosystem partners (IPON, Communitech, Accelerator Centre, etc.);
  • Developing a pipeline of regional entrepreneurs and Subject Matter Experts (SME's) who could benefit from commercialization services and support offered by the College and/or IPON with particular focus on priority sectors of medtech, artificial intelligence, and automotive;
  • Building solid, sustainable relationships with industry, community, and local academic partners (particularly Technology Transfer Offices) as well as relevant industry associations and other ecosystem partners;
  • Developing and reporting against Sheridan' s Annual Commercialization Plan;
  • Supporting the dissemination of knowledge through seminars, workshops, publications, conference presentations, and where applicable through commercialization/technology transfer;
  • In collaboration with the Manager of Research Communications, and Strategic Partnerships, developing and updating website, social media, and marketing content to promote the activities of Generator's IP and Commercialization supports;
  • Performing other related duties, as assigned.

You have excellent communication, networking, and strategic planning skills, with the ability to cultivate and maintain solid professional relationships and an effective network of contacts.

The successful candidate will also possess the following qualifications:
  • 4-year degree in Engineering, Business, Science, Law or a related field
  • 5 years of experience creating, filing, and/or managing intellectual property in Canada or the United States (equivalency to be considered)
  • Experience in IP and Commercialization, either through education or past work/personal experience
  • Project management experience
  • Experience in commercialization and/or technology transfer
  • Formal training in IP management or similar is desirable
  • Experience in a post-secondary education institution is an asset
  • Experience in IP strategy development and patent landscape analyses is preferred
