Certified Substitute School Nurse

Reports To: Building Principal/Human Resource Director
Nature and Scope of the Job
To act under the general direction of the Human Resource Director. To perform those duties required by school nurses to meet specific requirements as listed in state statutes and local school district policy related to the overall health care of students in the school system and other duties as assigned. School nurses employed by the Board of Education have the educational background, experiences and competencies to carry out the responsibilities and functions outlined below. School nurses continue to expand their identified roles. Professional growth is essential to any specialty area. Schools may well provide a facility in the nation for health promotion and the delivery of primary health care.
Job Functions
Essential Functions
Renders first aid as necessary to students and staff members as required during the school day, on school playgrounds and on field trips.
Provides information to staff members or students who have special health needs.
Implements school health management protocols for the child with special health needs, including the administration of medication and nursing procedures.
Acts as a resource person in promoting health careers.
Report to the building principal and school secretary upon arrival at the school building. Maintains as fully as possible the established routines and procedures of the school and implements nursing procedures and protocols as needed for students.
Other Functions
Mayassist with the various "screening" (vision and hearing) activities throughout the school year.
Follows all school district policies and procedures.
Provides technical assistance to staff members in the area of health care education and management.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Mental Ability:
Possess the ability to work with various personality types.
Possess sound emotional judgement.
Possess visual acuity, aided or non-aided, to read and interpret accurately written reports of a technical nature.
Possess the ability to enunciate clearly and communicate positively throughout the work day.
Possess the ability to follow and successfully complete both written and oral directions.
Possess the ability to calculate accurately.
Possess a knowledge of basic computer commands to run software related to word processing applications on a personal computer.
Education, License, Cerfification or Formal Training:
Posses current Wyoming Registered Nurse license.
Four year degree, either a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Registered Nurse approved program from an accredited college or university.

Physical Demands
Possess sufficient strength and stamina to remain seated for periods as long as 2 hours without fatigue or discomfort.
Possess sufficient strength and stamina to remain standing for periods as long as 2 hours without fatigue or discomfort.
Possess sufficient strength and stamina to remain in a "squatting" position for some period of time during the school day without fatigue or discomfort.
Possess sufficient strength to lift boxes or equipment that may weigh as much as 50 pounds and able to move them as far as 50 feet.
Possess visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer monitor for at least part of the day.
Environmental Demands
Frequent exposure to weather extremes.
Occasional exposure to blood-borne diseases.
Ability to travel to various assigned buildings.
