General Duties
The incumbent in this position has a primary responsibility for the provision of psychotherapy services through a Specialty Mental Health Clinic (MHC) at the Emporia Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC)and the Richmond VA Medical Center Mental Health Outpatient Clinic. Both are part of the Central Virginia VA Health Care System, which also includes Fredericksburg, Charlottesville, Henrico, or other locations. The incumbent will be expected to provide psychological assessment services and evidence-based, evidence-informed, and promising psychotherapies consistent with provision of care guidelines for Veterans presenting with a broad spectrum of psychological problems and psychiatric symptoms. The successful incumbent will have experience in provision of time-limited individual and group psychotherapies for veterans presenting with mental health concerns, particularly those with histories of military and non-military trauma. Additional foci of treatment may include anger management, insomnia, mood disorders, and anxiety disorders, among others.
Clinical Responsibilities (85% of time)
* Diagnoses mental disorders and conducts psychological and/or cognitive function assessments and neuropsychological screenings and assessments.
* Treats mental disorders through a variety of modalities and provides adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders.
* Provides a full range of psycho-diagnostic services including assessment and using the most appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques in providing quality care.
* Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions including individual and group psychotherapy, couples therapy, family therapy, consultation, tele-mental health, and psycho-education.
* Develops safety plans for patients with suicidal and/or homicidal ideation and intent
* Provides evidence-based and evidence-informed individual and group psychotherapy for military and non-military trauma, including sexual trauma, accidents, violence, and natural disasters, among others.
* Consults with medical center and CBOC staff on a wide variety of patient care issues.
* Complies with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards for documentation and proper patient check out procedures ( e.g., entering diagnostic and procedure codes).
Nonclinical Duties (15%)
A. Academic/Teaching/Training (5% of time).
* May provide clinical supervision, including trainees seeking licensure in psychology.
* May be involved in Psychology Training Program and Training Committee.
* May serve as a consultant to other medical center staff and trainees and assist in their formulation of the psychological characteristics and appropriate treatment expectations regarding their patients.
B. Admin/ Program Evaluation (10% of time)
a. Member of CBOC Mental Health Treatment Team, assessing and diagnosing patients, developing treatment plans, and making recommendations regarding treatment plans to other members of the treatment team.
b. Is involved in program evaluation activities.
c. Adheres to operational policies and procedures for the treatment team to which the incumbent is assigned.
d. Facilitates liaisons with other mental health and health care programs to. effectively coordinate services.
e. Attends and participates in administrative and informational meetings.
f. Participates fully in peer review and quality improvement reviews of other psychologists at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System and its CBOCs.
g. May serve on Healthcare System, VISN, and/or National VA committees or task forces.
h. May represent Psychology on decision-making committees at the Medical Center or Healthcare System.
i. May actively participate in leadership roles on local, state, and national professional organizations.
j. Represents the Medical Center of Healthcare System at professional/program community group/ events and committees.
k. Other duties as assigned.
