POSITION SUMMARY
The purpose of the dental hygienist is to provide dental hygiene treatments, and examinations, assess oral hygiene needs and abilities of patients; assist the dentist at the chairside, schedule appointments; and complete notes in the patient chart.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
Obtain, review and/or update and interpret an accurate medical/dental history and vital signs, recognizing predisposing and etiological risk factors that require intervention to prevent and control disease and conditions that require special precautions or consideration before or during dental hygiene care.
Evaluate the periodontium and identify conditions that compromise periodontal health and function and accurately record the results.
Identify the need for radiographs, obtain diagnostically correct radiographs, and distinguish normal form abnormal anatomical findings on the radiographs, accurately record the results.
Educate patients to prevent and control risk factors that contribute to caries, periodontal disease, and other oral conditions.
Apply basic and advanced principles of dental hygiene instrumentation to remove deposits without trauma to hard or soft tissue.
Develop and maintain a periodontal maintenance program.
Assists dentist at chairside (e.g., sets up & mixes filling materials, passes instruments & suctioning); assists in out-patient surgery at the hospital, monitoring the patient in recovery & relaying recommendations to medical staff; implements dental desensitization program for anxious &/or uncooperative patients; exposes, develops & mounts x-rays.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
License to practice dental hygiene issued by Ohio State Dental Board
Evidence of immunity to or immunization against Hepatitis B virus per OAC 4715-20-01.
