Established in 2023 under the leadership of the inaugural Chief Diversity Officer, the office collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to advance equity, inclusion, and belonging.
Currently seeking a Director, the office aims to lead inclusive engagement through program development, training, policy implementation, and assessment, addressing the outcomes of the 2022 NJIT Campus Climate Survey, specific to the student experience. The Director will oversee various initiatives, including Student Courageous Conversations, Heritage Month Programming and MLK Day events while partnering with campus stakeholders and serving as a student resource. Supervised by the Chief Diversity Officer, the Director will contribute to strategic planning and foster a climate of reflection, authenticity, and intercultural learning for students. Together with the Chief Diversity Officer, the Director will align diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging with the institutional strategic plan to help foster a culture of inclusivity and belonging at NJIT for students.
Essential Functions:
• Work closely with the Chief Diversity Officer and other campus partners to provide institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives that impact the student experience at NJIT.
• Act as a guide and organizer for DEI training and development among students entailing a consultative and cooperative method to enhance DEI competency across the institution specific to student experience. This will involve offering support in policy, assessment, and resource allocation to foster intentional practices and policies to advance DEI and effect change for the student campus community.
• Develop, manage, and maintain a high level of programming engagement on campus by overseeing and supervising the Associate Director for the Office of Inclusive Excellence in the implementation of crucial programming such as Heritage Month programming, MLK Day of Service, student leadership retreats, identity-based pre-commencement ceremonies, and religious educational programming.
• Participate and engage in campus-wide events and programs such as Convocation, Commencement, Open House, Homecoming, Alumni Weekend, etc.
• Utilize data from campus climate surveys to track progress and identify areas for student improvement in DEI efforts.
• Provide support and resources to students, ensuring they have access to the tools they need to thrive.
• Foster healthy relationships that influence positive change and demonstrate a commitment to DEI, particularly with students, Develop a multicultural student advisory board to engage students in DEI efforts and empower them to be leaders in creating change on campus.
• Work closely with the Program and Education Coordinator and Associate Director for the Office of Inclusive Excellence to create a student diversity peer educator program to engage students in DEI efforts on campus and advance DEI capacity among our student community.
• Focus on advancing DEI in STEM fields by encouraging engagement among undergraduate women students and students of color.
• Prior experience in student DEI programming, engagement and assessment, within higher education, demonstrating the ability to achieve student program goals aligned with institutional priorities and utilize data for informed decision-making.
• Expertise in conveying DEI concepts effectively and serving as a catalyst for cultural change and student belonging within the NJIT community.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
• A master's degree in higher education or a related field, plus at least five years of experience in a DEI role.
• Strong communication skills and working effectively with a diverse community.
• Must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student community.
• At the university's discretion, the education and experience
prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the
satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and
experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Demonstrated success implementing DEI initiatives, particularly ones that foster a sense of belonging for students.
• Experience working in a high-paced campus environment.
• Strong background in interpersonal conflict resolution or mediation.
• Familiarity with current DEI research literature.
