Mental Health Services Clinician/Liaison to International Students

Student Health and Well-being (SHWB) Mental Health Services at Johns Hopkins University seeks an energetic, organized, and motivated Mental Health Services (MHS) Clinician/Liaison to International Students to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment focused on delivering innovative mental healthcare and supporting the well-being of a diverse community of learners. Reporting to the Associate Director of Outreach, the MHS Clinician/Liaison to International Students is part of a growing team of clinicians focused on outreach and support for students and learners who may under-utilize traditional mental health services.

The MHS Clinician/Liaison to International Students will focus on utilizing generalist clinical skills and experience, along with expertise in outreach and consultation as essential mental health interventions. This position will work collaboratively within the MHS outreach team, as well as with students, student organizations, and offices across the university to develop relationships, programs, and services designed to best meet the needs of the university's international student population. As with all staff within Mental Health Services, this MHS Clinician/Liaison to International Students will also operate as a generalist who provides a full range of clinical services including initial consultations, individual goal-directed therapy, workshops, groups, and crisis intervention. This position will also demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in clinical work and all professional activities.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• This position's direct clinical service responsibilities will be split between the Homewood and East Baltimore campuses, and may provide some virtual or in-person services in Washington, D.C. See minimum qualifications for required timeframes of licensure. Jurisdictions required -Maryland and Washington, D.C.
  

Direct Clinical Service (50-55%)

• Creates a warm and welcoming clinical environment where clients feel supported and respected as they pursue their personal, academic, and professional goals.
  

• Provides multiculturally informed direct clinical services, including goal-oriented approaches to initial consultations, intake assessments, single-session therapy, individual counseling, group and relationship counseling, and crisis intervention for a diverse community of undergraduate, graduate and professional students and learners.
  

• Utilizes both flexible and goal-oriented approaches to individual treatment, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and interpersonal therapy, often in collaboration with treating psychiatrists.
  

• Collaborates with providers within SHWB as an interdisciplinary treatment team, including therapists, psychiatric providers, primary care clinicians, case management, and disability services staff.
  

• Provides clinical case management to support connections to appropriate resources and bridge clients to care.
  

• Consults, as appropriate, with providers in the community to facilitate continuity of care.

Outreach (25-30%)

• Develops, implements, and integrates evaluation feedback for psycho-educational workshops and other presentations for JHU students and learners with a special emphasis on prevention and intervention efforts for international students.
  
• Develops and facilitates opportunities for informal interactions with students to reduce barriers to counseling, which may include offering drop-in and chat hours, attending student events, and participating in a range of student-led and student-focused programs.
  
• Maintains a visible presence through participation in outreach and educational activities, including resource fairs, heritage events, and community activities.
  
• Conducts ongoing assessment of international student holistic needs through meetings and collaborations with students, campus partners, and the broader community of JHU to help eliminate barriers to counseling and mental health services.
  
• Generates content for MHS social media related to the mental health of international students.
  
• Makes the lead in developing and maintaining partnerships with students, student organizations, and university-wide groups for international students.
  
• Works collaboratively with the Office of International Students, Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Center for Student Success, and other offices to develop a network of support services to proactively address the holistic well-being needs of international students.
  

Collaborative and Other Activities (20%)

• Remains abreast of current literature and research on student behavioral health and evidence-based intervention strategies.
  
• Contributes to the professional development of trainees and SHWB staff through the provision of didactic training and seminars, including topics such as racism and racial trauma.
  
• Participates in case consultation, student risk management, peer chart reviews, and other departmental committees as directed.
  
• Participates in clinical training programs; licensed psychologists will enter the pool of available individual supervisors for the APA-approved psychology internship training program after 2 years of post-licensure experience.
  
• Works collaboratively with campus partners to support both the clinical and programmatic needs of students and learners.
  
• Participates in MHS recruitment and hiring processes.
  
• Completes documentation and administrative duties in accordance with MHS policies and procedures.
  
• Other duties as assigned.

• Experience independently executing psycho-educational presentations, programs, and events for a wide audience.
• Specialized training, interest, and/or experience working with international student populations.
• Bilingual proficiency is highly desirable.

Schedule

• This is a 37.5-hour/week position. One evening clinic per week (until 7 pm) may be required; additional flexible schedule options may be available.
• This position requires evening and weekend work dependent on the programmatic needs of the University and for activities during the academic year (orientation, special events, etc.).
• One day of remote work is standard; additional remote days may be required or permitted based on operational needs.
