POSITION: DIRECTOR OF PHARMACY
DEPARTMENT: PHARMACY DEPARTMENT
RESPONSIBLE TO: DIVISION SUPERVISOR OF PROFESSIONAL SERVICES and/or ADMINSTRATOR
CLASSIFICATION: C EXEMPT
BASIC FUNCTION: Under general direction of the Division Supervisor of Professional Services and/or Administrator, is continuously responsible for management of the hospital pharmacy; is directly responsible for planning, organizing, directing, supervising, and carrying out all functions and activities of the pharmacy principles and standards, and for maintaining compliance with federal, state and local codes and regulations.
PRINCIPALS RESPONSIBILITES AND STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE: 1. Plans, organizes and directs functions and activities of the pharmacy department according to the policies and regulations of Franklin Medical
Center and in compliance with the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy and Federal
Laws and Regulations
a. Develops policies and procedures for Pharmacy Department. Reviews
Policies annually and revises as necessary.
b. Maintains current valid Louisiana Board of Pharmacy Permit, Louisiana Narcotics and Drug Control License and DEA Certificates for Pharmacy.
2. Directs and supervises department personnel.
a. Interviews, orients, and instructs department personnel in functions and activities of the department.
b. Discusses procedures, workflow patterns, etc.
c. Encourages personnel to make recommendations concerning changes or improvements in any of the above.
d. Schedules hours, assigns duties, and evaluates performance.
3. Maintains satisfactory financial conditions within pharmacy department.
a. Prepares departmental personnel schedule and annual operating budget, subject to approval by the Administrator.
4. Maintains satisfactory communications with Administrator.
a. Meets with Administrator to discuss department objectives, budget and major purchasing priorities, management problems, pricing policies and other matters.
b. Keep administrator informed on new drug regulations and legal aspects of pharmacy services, and liability in case of error, etc.
c. Attends all Department Head Meetings or sends representative.
d. Accumulates statistics and prepares and submits reports as required by administrator, government agencies, and other authorities.
5. Maintains satisfactory communications with Medical Staff.
a. Meet with Medical Staff quarterly for Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
b. Contacts physicians individually as needed for clarification of drug orders, for consultation in Antibiotic Reviews and Drug Utilization Reviews.
c. Provides information on drugs, as needed.
6. Co-operates with other departments.
a. Co-ordinates pharmacy activities with those of other departments.
b. Maintains good working relationships with other department heads.
c. Co-operates to work out problems.
7. Participates on hospital committee and in hospital projects, and public relations programs as required.
a. Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Combined Meeting of Quality Assurance, Infection Control, and Safety Committees.
8. Keeps up-to-date in the field of pharmacy.
a. Reads current literature
b. Attends appropriate seminars, in-service programs and hospital pharmacy meetings.
c. Maintains adequate reference library.
9. Performs duties of Staff Pharmacist and/or Pharmacy Secretary as required.
a. Fills patient medication orders, makes charges.
b. Prepares intravenous admixtures, etc.
c. See job descriptions of Staff Pharmacist and Pharmacy Secretary.
10. Assumes or designates responsibility for being on call.
a. A Pharmacist is on call to provide information or come back to the hospital for emergency situations that may arise when pharmacy is closed.
11. Supervises purchasing. Is responsible for inventory control.
a. Is responsible for purchase of all drugs, chemicals, antibiotics, biologicals and pharmaceutical preparations used in the treatment of patients.
b. Verifies prices on invoices: Sends to business office with purchase orders and packing slips for payment.
c. Follows established procedures for disposition of damaged goods, for handling of shipping or invoice errors, for returns of out-of-date merchandise.
12. Is responsible for maintenance of approved stock of antidotes and other emergency drugs.
13. Maintains records.
a. Is responsible for the maintenance of appropriate records of all drugs and any other controlled substances that are received by, stored in, or dispensed from the Pharmacy.

a. Staff Pharmacist
b. Pharmacy Secretary/Clerk

a. Maintains contact with division supervisor of Professional Services and administrator concerning management problems, budget and purchase priorities, policies and procedures, legal aspects, etc.
b. Maintains contact with medical and nursing staff concerning drug detail and drug therapy in patient care, and related problems, policies and procedures.
4. External Relationships:
a. Maintains contact with drug and pharmaceutical salesmen concerning products and/or equipment maintenance.
b. Maintains contact with local pharmacies to obtain medications and items not stocked in hospital pharmacy.
DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS AND OTHER PERSONNEL SPECIFICATIONS:
1. Education - Bachelor degree in Pharmacy, licensed.
2. Experience - Supervisory experience or five years experience in an institutional pharmacy.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light work. Occasional prolonged standing and walking. Must have visual and hearing acuity. Manual dexterity. Must be able to orally communicate on the telephone and in personal contacts. Must have ability to access the entire physical plant. Requires repeated bending or stooping. Must be able to manipulate equipment and/or supplies. Must have temperature tolerance. Must be able to function independently and efficiently in completing tasks and duties with minimal supervision.
