Overtime Status: Non-exempt

Reporting to the Director of Natural Resources the Silviculture Forester will have a robust understanding of forestry in the Cariboo area. They need to have project and crew management experience. The Silviculture Forester must demonstrate a strong work ethic, be physically fit and have a positive attitude.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Responsible for managing technical aspects of operations silviculture projects, including planting implementation, surveys, site preparation, stand tending and activity supervision.
  2. Plan and oversee road inspections, road maintenance, and deactivations of forestry roads.
  3. Assist with Landscape Planning, Forest Stewardship Plans, and Cutting permit development.
  4. Provides assessments and communications on forest conditions, including forest health, by conducting reconnaissance surveys and site plan data collections.
  5. Oversee Biomass operations and sales.
  6. Wildfire response and assisting with prescribed burns.
  7. Harvesting supervision and road building supervision.
  8. Provides updates to Natural Resource Department regarding status of projects with relevant government agencies, First Nations and key external contacts.
  9. Assists the Stewardship Forester and Natural Resources department where required.
  10. Supports the mission, vision, and values of Williams Lake First Nation.
  11. Contributes to the WLFN's ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Williams Lake First Nation community, traditions, teachings, culture, protocols, and practices.
  • Knowledge of FRPA and regulations
  • Knowledge of the Professional Governance Act
  • Knowledge of Williams Lake First Nation community, traditions, teachings, culture, protocols, and practices.
  • Knowledge of Bio geoclimatic Zones in WLFN territory.
  • Knowledge of different silvicultural systems

Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to think critically and act logically to evaluate situations, solve problems and make decisions.
  • Ability to take directions and work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ensure that operations are carried out in an environmentally sensitive manner, in accordance with sustainable forest management practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
  • Work cooperatively with contractors and stakeholders, in addition to working independently in a field environment.


WORKING CONDITIONS
  • All services are provided immediately.
  • To be aware of sensitivity, confidentiality and urgency of requests while balancing other work commitments.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Non-standard hours of work - May be required to accommodate the community needs and that may consist of evenings and weekends.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Criminal Records Check
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid BC Driver's License and Driver's Abstract
  • Must provide a vehicle in good operating condition and appropriate vehicle insurance to meet program requirements OR access to company vehicle is provided and requires a valid Driver's License
