Detailed Overview:
As a member of the interprofessional care team, reporting to the Manager, Clinical Operations for day to day operations and delivery of services, and to the Occupational Therapy Clinical Practice Leader for professional practice and clinical issues, the Occupational Therapist provides occupational therapy services to child and adolescent patients of the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Unit (CAPSU) or Adolescent Psychiatry Unit (APU).
Responsibilities:
Provides occupational therapy services including the screening and assessment of patients within the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization Unit or Adolescent Psychiatry Unit using recognized occupational therapy tools and techniques to determine patients' required services and support needs.
Receives outpatient referrals from Child, Youth and Young Adult programs to offer occupational therapy assessments, interventions and recommendations.
Plans, implements, monitors, and evaluates individual and/or group rehabilitation programs to meet identified patient needs, in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team.
Provides consultation/liaison/education to community agencies, patient's families, and others involved in the patient's care to facilitate achievement of treatment goals.
Refers patients to other services as timely and appropriate for their care and recovery.
Maintains patient records, clinical outcome measures, professional standards measures and statistical data in accordance with departmental and Ministry of Health requirements.
Attends and participates in patient conferences and rounds as required and communicates pertinent information to all disciplines involved.
Participates in interprofessional and professional development departmental activities of Rehabilitation Services and Mental Health & Substance Use Services, such as in-services, professional guideline development, and continuing education activities.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited school of Occupational Therapy.
Current full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC).
Two (2) years of recent, related experience working in mental health with children and/or adolescents or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of child and adolescent development issues.
Knowledge of relevant legislation.
Ability to work with children and adolescents with mental health problems.
Knowledge of the COTBC standards of practice and practice guidelines for clinical practitioners.
Knowledge of occupational therapy standardized tests, measures, use of equipment and related techniques.
Ability to work with the community network and various community resources.
Ability to communicate effectively and respectively with patients, caregivers, members of the interprofessional care team, both verbally (one-on-one and in groups) and in writing.
Ability to teach and provide effective consultation to patients, caregivers, and other health care professionals.
Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional team.
Ability to deal effectively with others.
Ability to operate related equipment including relevant software applications.
Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
