The Office of Public Prosecutions (OPP) is an independent statutory authority responsible for preparing and conducting criminal prosecutions in Victoria on behalf of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Matters prosecuted by the DPP and the OPP involve serious crimes or matters that are of significance to the fair and effective operation of the Victorian criminal justice system.The OPP consists of the Solicitor for Public Prosecutions and a staff of approximately 475 providing legal and corporate support to the DPP, the Chief Crown Prosecutor and Crown Prosecutors in the exercise of their independent roles in the criminal justice system.
Managing Principal Solicitor, Higher Court Appeals
Full Time, Fixed Term - 12 Months.
The OPP has an exciting opportunity for a Managing Principal Solicitor who possesses a strong interest in the criminal jurisdictions of the County and Supreme Courts.
The successful incumbent will manage appeals to the Courts and review sentences and provide advice to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
As an experienced solicitor, you will be allocated a small number of complex appeals and will be required to manage files of staff, at relatively short notice, particularly during staff absences.
The available positions are Melbourne CBD based, with the opportunity to undertake occasional travel to regional Victoria.
Key accountabilities:
Manage a team of solicitors, provide high-level leadership and advice within the work group, and monitor the quality and standard of work performed by staff within the team
Identify relevant professional development opportunities for staff by ensuring staff are trained and supported to promote and support innovation within the team and across the organisation
Act a liaison on behalf of the OPP for Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Court matters, and in ensuring that matters are properly presented before the Higher Courts .
Proven ability to engage, motivate and manage a diverse group of legal professionals.
High level conceptual and analytical skills, excellent professional judgement and the ability to formulate and implement innovative solutions to meet business needs .
Developed interpersonal communication skills to liaise with and provide advice to staff, senior management and other relevant internal and external stakeholders.
The role of Managing Principal Solicitor at the OPP, requires that you:
Are admitted to the legal profession as an Australian Lawyer.
Hold a current Victorian Practising Certificate.
Hold a valid Australian Drivers' License.
